Ukraine Defends Against Massive Drone Attack: Damage and Infrastructure Disruptions

During the night of September 23 to 24, Ukrainian defense forces recorded a significant increase in drone attacks — successfully intercepting 126 out of 152 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that entered Ukrainian airspace.
This means that nearly 80% of the enemy drones were neutralized or suppressed before reaching their targets, yet the attacks remained potent and damaging.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force command, around 80 Shahid-type drones were in the air, typically targeting critical infrastructure, vital facilities, and energy networks.
Ukrainian aviation, air defense missile systems, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups actively responded to these threats, engaging and destroying the incoming enemy devices.
Data shows that drones are responsible for nearly 80% of casualties and equipment losses among Ukrainian forces, making the search for effective countermeasures a top priority for the country’s defense.
As of 09:00 in the morning, Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down or suppress 126 various Russian drones across the country — in the north, south, east, and central regions.
Nevertheless, crashes from destroyed UAVs caused damage at seven different locations, with debris impacting two others.
Notably, over 18 drones targeted Kharkiv, causing damage to energy infrastructure.
The city experienced power outages affecting approximately 30,000 residents, while another 50,000 have already been reconnected.
Experts warn that kamikaze drones may continue to pose a threat, emphasizing the urgent need to develop new and more effective countermeasures against these high-tech assaults.
