Trump at UN General Assembly Highlights Europe’s Role in Funding the War Through Russian Energy Supplies
During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, U.S.
President Donald Trump delivered a pointed warning regarding Europe’s involvement in prolonging the conflict in Ukraine through its continued purchase of Russian energy resources.
He emphasized that Europe’s dependence on Russian oil and gas essentially finances the ongoing war, which devastates the region and hampers peace efforts worldwide.
Trump stressed that this behavior not only economically supports the aggressor but also makes Europe a participant in the conflict, as it sustains hostilities and delays peaceful resolution. He pointed out that the key culprits in extending the war are China and India, which continue to buy Russian oil and gas, thus enabling Russia to fund its military campaign.
At the same time, he expressed disappointment that many NATO countries and European nations have yet to sever their energy ties with Russia, allowing Moscow to maintain the war effort.
“This cannot be justified,” he said, “they are funding a war against themselves.” Trump further warned that if Russia shows no willingness to negotiate an end to the conflict, the U.S.
is prepared to impose significant tariffs to stop the bloodshed, urging European countries to join in similar measures. He highlighted that Europe’s proximity to the conflict makes it highly vulnerable, and it is crucial for European leaders to cease energy purchases from Russia immediately to avoid further delays in ending the war.
The U.S.
president revealed that he plans to discuss this issue directly with European leaders during the Assembly.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s foreign minister recently reaffirmed his country’s stance on not abandoning Russian energy supplies despite U.S.
pressure.
The topic remains a major point of contention in efforts to tighten sanctions against Russia, with broader implications for global security and stability.
