Singapore Moves Toward New Diplomatic Measures on Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Singapore has taken a significant diplomatic step by announcing targeted sanctions against key leaders of Israeli settlements and expressing readiness to recognize Palestine under specific conditions.

This move signals Singapore’s increasingly active stance in the long-standing conflict, which has persisted for decades.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, speaking in Parliament, condemned Israeli officials’ statements about annexing parts of the West Bank and Gaza, labeling such actions destabilizing and undermining efforts for a two-state solution.

He announced that the sanctions would be aimed at influential figures accused of inciting violence.

This decision comes amid growing support from Western countries, including recent official recognition of Palestine by Britain, Canada, and Australia.

Balakrishnan also stated that recognition of a Palestinian state by Singapore is no longer a question of ‘if,’ but ‘when,’ provided certain conditions are met — notably, the establishment of an effective Palestinian government that recognizes Israel’s right to exist and renounces terrorism.

He emphasized that achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution requires negotiations leading to the creation of two independent states living peacefully side by side.

In response, Israeli officials are preparing a tough diplomatic reaction, possibly including increased pressure to prevent Palestine’s recognition at the UN and elsewhere.

The move by Singapore reflects a broader shift among Western nations, with France and Belgium expected to follow suit during the upcoming UN General Assembly session.

The international community urges immediate dialogue and compromise to prevent further escalation and foster a long-term peace process based on mutual recognition and respect for sovereignty.
