Amid ongoing tensions between Russia and the Baltic states, the Russian authorities made a startling and somewhat cynical move by accusing Estonia of spreading false allegations regarding airspace violations.

On September 22, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that three Russian military aircrafthad allegedly crossed Estonia’s airspace for a duration of 12 minutes.

According to Estonian military sources, three MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without permission on September 19, remaining there briefly before being forced to exit.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded by stating that Moscow had not received any evidence supporting Tallinn’s claims.

Previously, Russia denied that its fighter jets had penetrated Estonian airspace, asserting that the MiG-31s were flying from the Republic of Karelia toward the Kaliningrad region, without breaching Estonia’s territorial borders.

Meanwhile, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas announced that her country had launched consultations under Article 4 of NATO following the illegal intrusion of three Russian jets over the Gulf of Finland, an incident that heightened regional tensions and prompted diplomatic discussions among alliance members.
