Macron Outlines EU’s Independent Trade Policy in Response to Trump’s Calls for Tariffs
A new chapter in global trade diplomacy is unfolding as the European Union asserts its capacity to make autonomous decisions regarding economic sanctions and tariffs.
French President Emmanuel Macron, in a recent CBS News interview, elaborated on Europe’s stance following former U.S.
President Donald Trump’s push to introduce additional tariffs against China.
Macron emphasized that Brussels aims to maintain its independence in foreign policy and is cautious about escalating trade restrictions without comprehensive analysis.
The EU seeks to strike a balance between protecting internal interests and engaging strategically with major global players.The French leader highlighted that the EU plans to move away from reactionary measures and instead develop a cohesive strategy to address international challenges.
“We do not want to be passive participants in global trade disputes but instead aim to shape our own diplomacy and remain autonomous in choosing tools.
That’s why we are preparing flexible measures, including the possibility of imposing additional sanctions if necessary,” he stated.Furthermore, Macron underscored the importance of targeted actions against channels that support Russia through third-party countries.
“My position is to intensify efforts in identifying and dismantling schemes through which nations or suppliers help Russia circumvent sanctions or profit from the war.
This involves not only enhancing dialogue on secondary sanctions but doing so only where clear violations and strategic interests are involved,” Macron explained.The French president also expressed concern over potential repercussions of sanctions against China and India, particularly regarding their purchase of Russian oil.
He insisted that secondary sanctions are a critical part of fighting sanctions evasion, emphasizing that energy sales from Russia should be monitored, but not at the expense of isolating key economies.
