Kim Jong Un Open to Dialogue with the US, but Only Without Giving Up Nuclear Arsenal
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed his willingness to engage in talks with the United States, but under specific conditions: he opposes any diplomatic efforts that require Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.
According to his statements, Washington’s insistence on complete denuclearization only consolidates North Korea’s resolve to maintain its nuclear program.
During a session of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly on September 21, Kim emphasized that there are no obstacles to dialogue with the US if Washington shifts its stance and ceases the push for total disarmament.Kim noted that sanctions imposed on North Korea are not punishments but lessons that strengthened the country’s resilience and self-sufficiency.
These restrictions, he argued, have laid the foundation for the development of advanced missile technology and nuclear capabilities.
Furthermore, Kim categorically declared that North Korea will never exchange its nuclear arsenal for sanctions relief, viewing sanctions as a source of strength and independence.In the context of ongoing diplomacy, South Korea’s new leader, President Lee Jae-myung, who took office in June, is actively calling for renewed dialogue with Pyongyang.
His initiatives include confidence-building measures and gradual de-escalation of tensions, along with the potential reduction of North Korea’s nuclear activities.
Lee emphasizes that former US President Donald Trump could play a pivotal role in facilitating these efforts.While Western countries, especially the US, continue to apply sanctions and diplomatic pressure on North Korea, Kim remains steadfast in maintaining his country’s status as a nuclear power.
He believes that diplomacy must be based on mutual respect and consideration of North Korea’s interests.
