In order to prevent Ukrainian music from disappearing from the public eye and being replaced by Russian melodies within the country, a thorough and multifaceted strategy is necessary—one that combines educational efforts with administrative measures.

As Anatoliy Kalenichenko, artistic director of the ‘Chervona Ruta’ festival, emphasizes, modern conditions require employing a ‘carrot and stick’ approach—merging awareness campaigns with actions aimed at curbing wrongful dissemination of Russian cultural content. The first aspect, the ‘carrot,’ involves promoting Ukrainian music among youth, sharing new Ukrainian songs, bands, and performers.

This fosters a sense of pride, opens hearts to traditions, and encourages the younger generation to engage with their cultural roots.

Highlighting success stories of Ukrainian artists, discovering new talents, and establishing platforms for their growth are key components of this initiative. The second aspect involves legislative measures to limit and combat the spread of Russian music in public and private spaces.

Despite ongoing efforts, Russian songs still echo in cars, streets, and public venues.

Addressing this requires laws that impose penalties for broadcasts of Russian cultural products, helping curb their influence and prevent the reinforcement of pro-Russian sentiments. The ‘Chervona Ruta’ festival, founded in 1989, has recently resumed its activity after a nearly six-year hiatus.

This revival was marked by the slogan ‘Chervona Ruta Sounds — Resistance Continues,’ symbolizing ongoing efforts for Ukrainian cultural revival.

This year, the festival’s strategic partner is the Movement of Resistance of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine, highlighting the connection between military resilience and cultural identity.

As musician and soldier Taras Kompaniichenko states, even amid war, it is crucial that young people understand the value of Ukrainian culture and resist the lure of Russian pop music, which he views as a sign of cultural decline and a tool for Russian imperial influence.Ultimately, the fight for Ukrainian culture is not only about bans or propaganda but also about intentional efforts to educate and instill national pride among youth.

Using a combination of legislative tools and modern educational initiatives will help preserve and strengthen Ukrainian identity in the cultural sphere, making it an unbreakable foundation of an independent nation.
