New Opportunities for Voluntary Pension Contributions: Can a Ukrainian Woman Pay Pension Contributions for Her Husband Living Abroad Temporarily?

In 2022, Ukraine introduced significant simplifications in the process of voluntary participation in the mandatory state pension insurance system.

The new mechanism allows Ukrainian citizens to make their voluntary contributions without the need to visit government agencies in person, utilizing modern digital signatures and online platforms.

This is especially relevant for those living abroad who wish to provide additional pension stability or improve social security for their family members, including unemployed pensioners.

According to the new rules, a woman currently residing abroad can legally and conveniently make voluntary pension contributions on behalf of her husband, who officially lives in Ukraine.

This is possible thanks to an automated system that enables the signing of relevant agreements in any convenient format globally.

To access this service, it is necessary to be registered in the State Register of insurable persons under mandatory social insurance, and to ensure that the person for whom the contribution is made is not yet of pension age or receiving pension payments.

The Pension Fund of Ukraine clarified that to begin participation, one must conclude an electronic agreement, which is possible from anywhere in the world.

To count the payment toward insurance experience and to build a proper pension history, the contribution must be at least equal to the minimum insurance premium — currently 22% of the minimum wage, which is 8,000 UAH.

Thus, each payment should be at least 1,760 UAH.

These innovations open additional opportunities for Ukrainians to plan their retirement responsibly and ensure financial stability for their loved ones amidst modern challenges and legislative changes.
