On Sunday morning, tensions increased once again over the Baltic Sea amid heightened activity from Russian military aircraft, raising alarms within the alliance.

According to military sources, German aviation intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 missile carrier aircraft that was detected in neutral airspace near the Baltic states.

The incident followed reports of violations of international airspace by Russian military aircraft without flight plans or radio communication, casting doubt on Moscow’s commitment to regional security efforts. Two Eurofighter fighters were dispatched to respond, visually identifying the aircraft before shadowing the Russian Il-20.

After confirming its identity, the fighters handed over escort duties to their Swedish partners and returned to base in Rostock-Laage.
