On Sunday, Germany’s military aircraft took a significant step in regional defense when two modern Eurofighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft detected over the Baltic Sea.

The incident occurred amidst a backdrop of rising regional tensions, marked by recent incursions into airspace by Russian military planes.

The German Air Force reported that the intruding aircraft did not respond to attempts to establish communication or orders to identify itself.

In response, two Eurofighter jets from the Rostock-Laage base in northern Germany were deployed to intercept.

The Russian Il-20M, identified during the patrol, heightened concerns among military authorities.

This episode is part of a broader pattern of escalating provocations in the Baltic region, where multiple violations of airspace have been recorded in recent days.

On Friday alone, Russian aircraft entered Estonian airspace, and Polish forces detected low-flying Russian drones above the Petrobaltic drilling platform in the Baltic Sea.

The United Nations Security Council has scheduled an emergency session for Monday to address these developments and discuss measures to ensure regional stability and security.
