Estonia Demonstrates Readiness to Defend Amid Russian Provocations and Strengthens Defense Capabilities
In recent developments, Estonia reaffirms its unwavering stance on security and defense, clearly indicating its preparedness to respond to any provocative actions by Russia, including potential airstrikes.
Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that Estonia’s air defense system, in cooperation with NATO allies, is functioning flawlessly, and the country stands ready to apply force if necessary to protect its borders and sovereignty.
According to him, Russia’s aggressive actions, such as frequent provocations in the airspace, should be viewed within the strategic context aimed at discouraging Western support for Ukraine – a move to shift focus away from aiding Ukraine to domestic concerns.Pevkur explained that one of Moscow’s main objectives is to create an illusion of NATO weakness and distract allies from their collective defense strategies.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that incidents like the interception of Russian MIG-31 fighters, which intruded into Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland last Friday and remained for approximately 12 minutes, do not undermine NATO’s readiness.
