Renowned Ukrainian Veteran Movement Coach and Activist Taras Shpuk Killed in War

In the intense battles against Russian aggression taking place in eastern Ukraine, Taras Shpuk, known by his callsign ‘Cherep,’ a former employee of the charitable organization ‘Return Alive,’ tragically lost his life.
His death has become a significant loss for the Ukrainian veteran community and the sports sector at large.
Taras was not only a dedicated participant in combat operations but also a deeply respected coach who dedicated many years to preparing Ukrainian athletes for international competitions such as the Invictus Games and Warrior Games.
Born and raised in Ivano-Frankivsk, he transitioned from participating in the Euromaidan protests to serving in the military.
When the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, he initially sought to return to the front lines but stayed working within the organization, coordinating support for the troops.
In November 2023, he eventually joined military intelligence, actively fighting against the enemy.
According to Return Alive, Taras was one of the most active organizers of the veteran movement and sports initiatives aimed at supporting veterans.
The organization’s director, Taras Chmut, called him ‘an Ukraine leader’ — a person who always found solutions, took responsibility in difficult situations, and inspired others.
His contribution to the development of veteran sports is invaluable: he served as a coach for Ukraine’s teams at Invictus and Warrior Games and helped create the Veteran Forum, which became a platform for unity among veterans and activists.
Darina Prikup, the organization’s operations manager, highlighted his unique qualities — how he cared for others even in the toughest times and was always ready to help.
Sadly, the military conflict took his life — Taras became the first staff member of the organization to die directly on the battlefield after February 24, 2022.
This tragedy represents not only a devastating loss for his loved ones but also a significant blow to the Ukrainian veteran movement, as his life and efforts remain a symbol of unwavering dedication and service to his country.
