Ukraine Establishes New Military Ombudsman Office: President Zelensky Signs Decree

In response to pressing challenges in ensuring legal rights for military personnel and their families, Ukraine has officially launched a new institution – the Office of the Military Ombudsman.
This step was formally announced through a decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the rights of defenders of the nation.
Following the adoption of the relevant law by the Verkhovna Rada on September 17, the creation of this office has gained legal status, legitimizing its role as a crucial mechanism to assist and protect service members and their relatives.
The President highlighted that this newly established body aims to bring tangible changes in the system of protecting soldiers’ rights, including transparency, quick response, and effective cooperation with other government agencies.
Olga Reshetylova, appointed by the President as the chief commissioner, is well known among military personnel, and she will serve as the first head of this institution.
Her responsibilities will include implementing new standards for protecting the rights of service members and their families.
This marks the second significant step in strengthening legal protections for Ukrainian military personnel, as Reshetylova previously served as an authorized representative for their rights.
This initiative demonstrates a high level of commitment to addressing the needs of defenders, who are currently fighting for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity, and it is a fundamental step in guaranteeing their legal rights and social support.
