Pensions for Children of Fallen Soldiers: What You Need to Know About Payment Amounts and Application Procedures

In Ukraine, families of heroes who have died or gone missing in action while performing their official duties are entitled to receive survivor pensions.
This important social support provides mothers, fathers, and children with financial assistance during difficult times.
According to current legislation, rights to these pensions are granted to disabled military personnel, as well as underage and student children of soldiers who died due to service-related reasons or in connection with their duties.
The pension amount depends on the cause of death, the recipient’s gender, and the status of the fallen soldier.
Payments can range from 30% to 70% of the soldier’s salary, calculated individually based on insurance type and length of service.
For families of those who died in combat, the maximum pension is set at 70% of the service member’s salary but not less than 7800 hryvnias.
If death occurred not during service but due to an unrelated accident, the pension decreases to 30%.
Additional benefits are also available—such as a 25% allowance of the subsistence minimum for disabled family members of Ukraine’s defenders.
It is also important to note that the right to receive the survivor pension persists even if the child is adopted by a stepfather or stepmother, with specific rules for recalculations and continuation of payments.
This social protection mechanism aims to support families who have sacrificed loved ones in the line of duty, ensuring their financial stability in challenging circumstances.
