European Union Intensifies Sanctions Against Russia: New 19th Package of Restrictions Announced

Chas Pravdy - 19 September 2025 13:24

The European Commission officially approved the latest, 19th package of sanctions aimed at further restricting Russia’s economic activities and curbing its ability to fund military operations.

This move, announced by Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho, follows a delayed review process that was initially expected to conclude a year earlier.

Official statements are expected from EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, after 3 p.m.

local time, according to sources from Liga.net.

The sanctions package, once approved by the EU Council on Friday, will become legally binding shortly thereafter.

Among the key measures are a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports into the EU until January 1, 2027, marking a significant tightening of energy trade restrictions.

Additional sanctions target shadow tanker fleets, cryptocurrencies, Russian and Central Asian banks, Chinese oil refineries, and loopholes in customs procedures that Russia exploits for importing dual-use goods.

Despite ongoing purchases of Russian LNG by Europe, the strategic aim of Moscow to dominate the European gas market remains evident.

Exporting gas not only boosts Russia’s budget and war effort but also allows Kremlin to expand its influence within the EU.

In a detailed analysis, Vladimir Kravchenko discusses how Europe’s hesitation and ongoing imports of Russian gas pose challenges to achieving true energy independence and the potential consequences of tightening sanctions.
