Estonia Calls NATO for Consultations Following Russian Fighter Jet Violation of Airspace

Following an incident last Friday, when three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland without prior authorization, the Estonian government officially requested consultations with NATO under Article 4 of the alliance’s charter.
According to sources, the Russian aircraft remained in Estonian airspace for approximately 12 minutes, causing significant concern among Estonian authorities and military officials.
NATO confirmed that it intercepted the Russian planes, with Prime Minister Kaja Kallas describing the intrusion as ‘absolutely unacceptable’ and emphasizing that Estonia would not remain silent in the face of threats to regional security and stability.
In her statement, she said, ‘We have reached out to the alliance for consultations under Article 4.’ Meanwhile, European Union Chief Diplomat, Kaja Kallas, called the incident ‘an extremely dangerous provocation’ and argued that Russia is testing the resolve of the West.
Local politicians and diplomats are urging tougher measures and increased pressure on Moscow.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga called for ‘firm pressure’ on Russia to prevent similar escalations in the future.
