Escalation of Tensions: Russian Fighter Jets Violated Estonia’s Airspace for Several Minutes

On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without permission, remaining there for approximately twelve minutes.

This provocative incident marked another escalation in the ongoing tensions between the Baltic states and Russia, which has seen repeated airspace violations.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry promptly summoned the temporary Russian chargé d’affaires to officially protest and deliver a diplomatic note.

According to officials, the incursion happened over the Gulf of Finland, with the jets crossing Estonia’s sovereign airspace undetected and lingering for over ten minutes.

This was the fourth such violation this year, raising serious concerns among Estonian authorities.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized that such brazen acts are unprecedented and demand a strong response.

He added that the increasing aggression from Russia, fueled by extensive military testing and provocative border activities, should lead to swift political and economic pressure on Moscow.

Estonia has also initiated unscheduled defense drills aimed at improving readiness against airspace breaches.

Unlike neighboring Latvia and Poland, which have already closed their borders with Russia and Belarus, Estonia currently relies on its military preparedness, deeming border closure unnecessary for the moment.

The incident underscores the rising instability in the region and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to secure national sovereignty.
