Von der Leyen stresses the importance of strengthening EU trade agreements with India to reduce dependency on the US

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the significance of intensifying trade relations between the European Union and countries across the globe.
She highlighted India as a key partner that could help the EU diversify its trade channels and diminish reliance on the United States’ dominant global position.
According to her, the EU is actively working on negotiating new trade treaties with these nations, aiming to bolster its economic resilience.
Of particular importance is the upcoming goal to finalize a trade agreement with India, which represents a crucial step toward regional independence and economic self-sufficiency.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent phone conversation, reaffirmed his commitment to this objective and assured cooperation.
Moreover, the EU is also in talks with South Africa, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries, seeking to expand its network of international partnerships.
Nonetheless, the process faces obstacles: as part of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, the EU is considering restrictions on Indian and Chinese companies involved in oil trade with Russia, illustrating the geopolitical complexity of this strategy.
Meanwhile, the strong military links between the US and India persist despite mounting trade disputes, highlighting the multifaceted nature of their international relations.
