Expected Date for the EU’s 19th Sanctions Package Against Russia: Potential Dates and Current Developments

The delay in unveiling the European Union’s 19th sanctions package against Russia is gaining momentum, as official sources indicate that its announcement might be postponed due to political negotiations and intra-European disagreements.

Initially, it was expected that the European Commission would present this package on September 17, but political pressure and demands from the US administration, particularly the firm stance of Donald Trump regarding sanctions, have considerably complicated the decision-making process.

According to Politico, EU officials informed member diplomatic missions that the package could be ready for announcement either on September 19 or September 22; however, there is also a possibility it could be introduced earlier.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasized the imminent presentation of the sanctions, highlighting the need for stronger measures against Russian banks, energy sectors, crypto exchanges, and the shadow fleet funding the war.

Meanwhile, internal debates within Brussels continue over reducing Russia’s oil imports, though no official statements have been made yet.

Analysts point out that the US’s demands include a call for NATO to reduce dependence on Russian oil—a goal unlikely to be achieved, especially considering Turkey’s reliance on Russian supplies and reluctance to join sanctions.

Additionally, Hungary and Slovakia are delaying progress on energy diversification, complicating the broader EU efforts.

Media reports suggest that such strategic moves may be deliberately designed to hinder the implementation of harsher sanctions against Russia, creating political obstacles.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin increasingly displays confidence and shows no signs of willingness to end the war swiftly, making diplomatic resolution prospects less feasible.
