German Coalition Leaders Make Historic Visit to Kyiv, Affirming Continued Support for Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom and Security
On September 1st, Kyiv hosted a significant diplomatic event as prominent leaders from Germany’s ruling coalition visited the Ukrainian capital for the first time.
Jens Spahn from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and Matthias Miersch from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) arrived in Kyiv to demonstrate Germany’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict.
This marked a momentous occasion — it was the first joint visit by parliamentary group leaders of Germany’s coalition parties to Ukraine, and both politicians were making their debut visit to Kyiv.
According to sources, the trip underscored Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its resistance against Russian aggression and was aimed at intensifying diplomatic efforts to bring the war to a swift end.
During a press statement, Jens Spahn emphasized: ‘Matthias Miersch and I are here to send a clear signal — that the parliamentary factions of the CDU/CSU and SPD stand now and will continue to stand in the future by Ukraine, by the brave Ukrainian people who are defending their homeland, their country, and Europe’s security.’ When asked about security guarantees for Ukraine, Spahn responded that the best assurance lies in a well-equipped Ukrainian army: ‘The primary and most important guarantee of Ukraine’s security is its army.
We want to arm it with the best possible equipment to ensure it can defend its nation and repel any aggressors.
This is vital not only for Ukraine but for the safety of all Europe.’ It is worth noting that just prior to this, on August 25th, Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Lars Klingbeil, paid a visit to Kyiv, during which he reiterated Germany’s pledge to provide Ukraine with at least nine billion euros annually in aid over the coming years, further emphasizing Berlin’s firm support in these challenging times.
