Fico Prepares Unexpected Meeting with Zelensky Amid Diplomatic Activities in Asia and Europe
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced his upcoming visit to Ukraine, scheduled for the end of this week.
This development follows his confirmation of plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, immediately after concluding high-level diplomatic negotiations in China.
Prior to this, Fico will travel to Beijing to engage in important talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is currently on a brief but intensive visit to China, confirmed by the Kremlin.
According to Fico, after returning from China, he will head to eastern Slovakia for a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian leader.
The details of this meeting remain undisclosed, as it has not been publicly announced.
Notably, since taking office in 2023, Fico has not held any direct bilateral discussions with Zelensky.
Their relations have notably cooled due to Fico’s recent contacts with Moscow and his visit to Russia, which drew a reaction from Kyiv.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Fico and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic are the only European leaders invited by Putin to participate in the official celebrations in Moscow on May 9, commemorating Victory Day.
