Hungary insists on veto: Blocking Ukraine’s EU accession talks over national interests and security concerns

Hungary reaffirms its unwavering and firm stance to block the initiation of any negotiations regarding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, the country will not permit the opening of the first cluster of negotiations, citing risks to national interests and security.
The Hungarian government emphasizes that such steps could negatively impact Ukrainian farmers, compromise food security, and allow Ukrainian organized crime to infiltrate Hungarian territory.
“We will not allow Ukraine’s advancement in the EU if it threatens our interests, particularly in agriculture and security,” Szijjártó stated.
Meanwhile, Lithuania calls on the EU to take decisive measures to make Ukraine’s membership application real and irreversible.
The Lithuanian proposal suggests that negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova should begin at a technical level without Hungary’s participation, provided all 26 member states agree.
Official approval may follow later, should Budapest change its stance or government.
Diplomatic circles also express concerns over the separation of Ukraine’s and Moldova’s efforts during the first negotiating clusters, especially ahead of visits by French, German, and Polish leaders to Moldova, which complicates Ukraine’s European integration process.
