Friedrich Merz Predicts a Long War and No Plans for Ground Troops in Ukraine

In a recent interview with ZDF, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly announced that the war between Russia and Ukraine could continue for a prolonged period, and the deployment of ground troops on Ukrainian territory is not currently under consideration.
According to Merz, he is prepared for a long-term conflict and emphasized that compromises capable of ending the war should not come at the expense of Ukraine’s capitulation.
The Chancellor highlighted that while the war could end tomorrow if Ukraine capitulated, such a scenario would mean losing the country’s independence and sparking further global conflicts.
“One day, if Ukraine gives up and loses its freedom, just a few days later another country could face the same fate.
That cannot be allowed,” Merz stated.Regarding the possibility of a ceasefire by next year, he expressed cautious optimism but also said he does not hold illusions about a quick resolution.
Merz stressed that negotiations on security guarantees are ongoing in case of a ceasefire, but this does not include deploying ground forces in Ukraine.
He also emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts and does not believe that the war will end swiftly or without prolonged effort.Previously, Merz had voiced his views on the war, asserting that all parties want it to end, but not at the cost of Ukraine’s independence.
He pointed to the difficulties in diplomatic negotiations and the unpredictability involved in finding a peaceful resolution.
Public opinion in Germany indicates that many citizens believe their chancellor has limited influence over the U.S.
president concerning the war in Ukraine, complicating the search for a diplomatic compromise.
