UN Urges Immediate Ceasefire and Renewed Diplomacy in Ukraine Crisis

The United Nations has issued an urgent call to the conflicting parties in Ukraine, urging an immediate halt to hostilities and increased diplomatic efforts aimed at establishing comprehensive and inclusive negotiations to achieve lasting and just peace.
This plea was articulated during the Security Council meeting in New York on August 29, serving as a stark reminder of the pressing need to stop the devastation and create conditions conducive to enduring stability.
With the support of the international community, the UN emphasizes that a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire is a crucial step toward restoring stability and respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Meanwhile, recent figures highlight the tragic human toll: since February 2022, at least 14,054 civilians have been killed, including 730 children, according to reports.
Over 36,000 civilians have been injured, with more than 2,200 children among them.
July marked the deadliest month in the past year, with 1,674 casualties, including 286 deaths.
The organization underscores that the scale of destruction and civilian suffering far exceeds international expectations, especially considering the expanding frontlines and the widespread use of landmines.
Humanitarian aid remains vital, with millions of Ukrainians receiving support.
This year alone, assistance has reached 3.8 million people, and plans for the winter of 2025–2026 aim to support an additional 1.7 million.
The UN calls on donors to increase and stabilize financial contributions to ensure uninterrupted humanitarian missions.
It further urges all parties to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law and guarantee safe humanitarian access to all in need, regardless of territorial control.
The UN also condemns attacks on civilians everywhere, including within Russia, where reports of civilian casualties continue.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that, at Kyiv’s initiative and with international support, the Security Council held an urgent session following mass missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, underscoring the international community’s deep concern and call for decisive action.
