The Future of Ukrainian Vocational Education: New Horizons in Career Guidance and the Role of Career Hubs

Ukraine is actively implementing innovative approaches to youth career guidance, including the establishment of specialized career hubs designed to become key platforms for teenagers to explore various future professions.
According to statistics, over 80% of Ukrainian students are already contemplating their careers, yet only about one-third can identify a specific profession or employment sector they wish to pursue.
This level of certainty is half of the average in other countries, highlighting the urgent need for systematic reforms in the field of career guidance.
The main challenges remain stereotypes and insufficient information, which often lead to misconceptions about the modern labor market and the opportunities available to young people. To address these issues, a program has been launched to create career hubs across different regions of Ukraine.
Currently, ten such centers operate in Kyiv, Lviv, Chernihiv, Poltava, Odesa, and Ivano-Frankivsk, and they will start functioning from September 1.
These hubs will provide students and young learners not only with information about relevant professions but also with practical experiences through interactive workshops, simulators, and demonstrations of cutting-edge equipment. The first hub in Chernihiv was opened at the local Railway Vocational School in collaboration with the Swiss-Ukrainian DECIDE project and Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science.
The space features zones where students can learn modern technologies and try out new skills.
For example, learners can master water filtration techniques, assemble photovoltaic systems, grow microgreens using hydroponic setups, or even explore careers via VR excursions.Significant attention is paid to high-demand professions such as electricians, landscape designers, plumbers, motor mechanics, and telecommunications engineers.
For instance, in the vocational school, students can assemble electrical circuits or learn about microgreen cultivation, and with VR goggles, they can virtually visit the cab of a train or a gas distribution station.Employers play a crucial role in shaping the career guidance system—they sign memoranda with vocational schools, conduct excursions, master classes, and practical activities.
This not only boosts student interest but also provides deeper, real-world skills aligned with business needs.Given current challenges and market shifts, establishing such platforms and working consistently with youth should become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s long-term strategic development of vocational education.
The goal is to attract more young people into technical education and develop a competitive talent pool essential for the country’s economic growth.
