Zelensky announces continued control over the departure of Ukrainian men aged 18-22 during the war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently confirmed during a press briefing that Ukrainian authorities are not conducting a mass outflow of men aged 18 to 22 abroad.
The main goal of this policy is to ensure that as many young Ukrainians as possible complete their education—both schools and universities—in Ukraine, thereby strengthening the nation’s security and potential.
Zelensky emphasized that the decision remains in effect and has not led to a significant increase in departures.
Instead, it is aimed at providing equal opportunities for youth to pursue education domestically.
He referred to statistics indicating a deterioration in the number of school and university students in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of maintaining young people’s ties to their homeland.
The president pointed out that stopping mass departures before completing education is crucial, as this period is vital for fostering patriotism and a sense of identity among young people.
He stressed that the age of 18 to 22 is a university and student period where obtaining higher education locally is particularly important.
Zelensky assured that this policy does not compromise military defense, as there is no evidence of mass departures—statistics show the opposite.
He expressed confidence that most young people will return home after the war, emphasizing the importance of education and social policy to minimize long-term risks to the national potential.
