Ukrainian Women-Heroes Fighting Landmines: Photo Exhibition «Women in Demining» Opens at Taras Shevchenko National Museum

In Kyiv, at the Taras Shevchenko National Museum, a significant event took place with the opening of a new photo exhibition called «Women in Demining».
This exhibition highlights the inspiring and courageous women of Ukraine who dedicate their days to ensuring the safety of their fellow citizens by clearing land contaminated with mines and explosive remnants of war.
The exhibition aims to draw public attention to the vital role women play in mine clearance operations, showcasing their bravery, dedication, and relentless effort to restore security in war-affected areas.
The display features rare photographs of heroines risking their lives daily while conducting complex and high-stakes demining tasks.
The opening ceremony was attended by various guests, partner organizations, and the women involved in humanitarian demining projects, exemplifying patriotism and unwavering commitment.
Visitors had the opportunity to engage with demining women, learn about their challenging work and the difficulties they face.
According to the Ministry of Defense, in July alone, deminers cleared over five thousand hectares of liberated territories, making a crucial contribution to Ukraine’s recovery and safety.
Among the heroines is 21-year-old Diana Obzhelyan, who initially studied to become a translator but shifted her path to join the ranks of Ukrainian deminers.
She is the first woman in the country to specialize in mine clearance.
Another featured heroine is Tetyana Mordach, Ukraine’s first female diver-deminers, who previously worked as a rescue diver and now manages underwater demining activities.
Alongside them are young women like Valeria Osyka, actively involved in clearing Kharkiv region—one of the most contaminated regions in Ukraine—and experiencing the joy of seeing the land turn green again after demining.
The project is carried out with the support of the international humanitarian organization The HALO Trust Ukraine and in cooperation with various partners, including the Canadian and Ukrainian foreign ministries, the State Emergency Service, and the National Police.
The «Women in Demining» exhibition will run until September 14, 2025, providing an eye-opening insight into the heroic efforts of Ukrainian women risking their lives daily to bring peace back to Ukraine’s territories.
