Russia’s increase in maritime drones: new threats to Ukrainian ships and infrastructure

The recent months have been marked by the emergence of new, significant military threats that Russia is actively deploying in the maritime domain.
Ukrainian experts and military officials have long warned about the potential development and use of innovative unmanned systems capable of damaging not only military vessels but also key communication and port infrastructure.
Of particular concern is the so-called «Rubicón» project — an attack drone vessel capable of operating in crisis situations and targeting Ukrainian maritime assets.According to Sergiy Beskrestnov, Russia is set to intensify its maritime offensive infrastructure in the coming weeks and months through the deployment of autonomous devices.
Last month, he warned that the Russian drone system center «Rubiçon» already possesses unmanned attack craft and is conducting relevant training and operational scenarios.
These systems include both surface and underwater unmanned vehicles designed to operate in the maritime environment, making them extremely dangerous. The recent attack in the Danube estuary demonstrated that Russia is actively developing its «water» Rubiçon, indicating a plan to carry out large-scale operations aimed at destroying Ukrainian maritime infrastructure including ports, ships, and combat platforms.
Ukrainian forces face the challenge of countering increasingly sophisticated and effective Russian drone technologies. To defend against these threats, Ukrainian defense systems need quick adaptation.
Current search and destruction systems, especially FPV drones, prove effective, but full-scale resistance requires better coordination and modernization of military units.
Given that «Rubiçon» can potentially operate hundreds of vessels simultaneously, Ukrainian forces must prepare for large and uncontrolled attacks.Previously, Russia announced the intensification of its drone development, specifically under the Rubiçon program.
In July, there was an attempt to deploy these combat drones against Ukrainian targets, but they exploded within Russian territorial waters.
This highlights ongoing technological development within Russia and poses a high risk of large-scale sea operations.Ukraine must act proactively by strengthening its defense capabilities and enhancing rapid response systems.
Failing to do so could mean losing further control over maritime territory and infrastructure, with serious consequences for national security.
