One of Russia’s leading oil producers has become the target of a large-scale attack, resulting in the suspension of operations at one of the country’s largest oil refining plants — the Kuybyshevsky Oil Refinery in Samara.

The assault, carried out yesterday morning, involved dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that caused extensive damage and ignited fires across the site.

According to sources cited by ASTRA, at least seven separate fire outbreaks were recorded, leading to the factory’s complete halt in production.

In total, at least 29 drones were involved in the attack, with one striking the primary oil processing unit, AVT-4, causing critical damage and disrupting the technological processes.

The attack also targeted the liquefied gas rack, pipelines with gasoline, hydrogen production units, and diesel tanks.

Local authorities have refrained from publicly commenting on the incident, only confirming that the attack was repelled without disclosing the full extent.

Meanwhile, reports indicate a massive fire at the Novoshakhtinsk Refinery that lasted five days and destroyed six tanks.

According to Reuters, by August 2025, the unused capacity of Russia’s oil refining industry peaked at a record 6.4 million tons per month.

The country lost around 17% of its refining capacity, approximately 1.2 million barrels per day, creating new challenges for Russia’s energy sector.
