European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reiterated her firm stance on the need for diplomatic resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, speaking ahead of crucial negotiations.

In her message, she emphasized that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must recognize the importance and appropriateness of sitting down at the negotiating table to find solutions.

Von der Leyen highlighted that a fair and lasting peace can only be achieved with solid security guarantees for Ukraine and the global community.

She also stated that the European Union is actively preparing to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard, including strengthening defense capabilities through tools like SAFE to support Ukrainian armed forces.

Amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, a significant overnight missile strike on Kyiv resulted in extensive damage.

The EU leader also called for increased sanctions against Russia, noting that the 19th package of strict measures is soon to be announced, aimed at increasing economic pressure and compelling Russia back to diplomacy.

Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the EU will continue acting as a mediator in the conflict and will do everything possible to promote peace and stability in the region.
