Ukrainian Railways face significant disruption due to enemy attack and power outage
Following a large-scale enemy assault, Ukraine’s railway network has sustained substantial damage, leading to widespread train delays and severe schedule disruptions.
According to the Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia), during the night of August 28, a sudden wave of attacks damaged critical infrastructure, including electrical substations and railway tracks in the Vinnytsia region.
This sabotage caused power outages affecting key railway junctions and routes, significantly hindering both passenger and freight transportation.
The railway company reports that many trains have either been canceled or rerouted to avoid damaged sections, complicating travel for thousands of commuters and cargo shippers.Official sources specify that disruptions affected vital routes such as: #87 Zaporizhzhia – Kovel; #139 Kyiv – Kamianets-Podilskyi; #77 Odesa – Kovel; #3 Zaporizhzhia – Uzhhorod; #47 Zaporizhzhia – Mukachevo; #32 Przemysl – Zaporizhzhia; #92 Lviv – Kyiv; and #52 Lviv – Kyiv.
Ukrzaliznytsia explained that some trains are rerouted around damaged areas, while those already en route are operating with backup diesel locomotives to ensure continuity of service.
This measure aims to minimize the impact of infrastructure damage on passengers and freight. The company also reported that restoration work on the electrical systems is underway but expected to take several days due to extensive damage.
Ukrainian Railways encourages passengers to stay informed and be patient during this challenging period, as authorities work tirelessly to restore full service.
The incident highlights vulnerabilities within critical infrastructure and underscores the urgent need for modernization and heightened security measures to protect against future threats.
