Shelling of Kyiv and Russia: escalation of conflict and calls for peace

Amid recent developments in Kyiv and around it, discussions increasingly focus on the dynamic — both positive and negative — of military actions occurring not only within Ukraine but also targeting Russia.

While Russia continues launching massive strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure, Ukrainian forces respond with counterattacks on Russian oil refining plants, destroying significant portions of production facilities.

This opens new scenarios for escalation, posing greater risks to peaceful resolution.

In the United States administration, spokesperson Caroline Leavitt emphasizes that both sides may not desire the end of this war, but rather are driven by strategies prolonging the conflict.

She noted that President Donald Trump closely monitors the situation and wishes for the war to end, but also stressed that the leaders of both countries need to want the same.

According to her, Ukrainian and Russian forces have demonstrated their destructive capabilities multiple times: Ukraine — attacking Russian oil refineries; Russia — striking Kyiv and critical infrastructure.

On the night of August 28, the Russian military conducted the largest attack to date, deploying over 600 drones and missiles across Ukraine, resulting in numerous casualties, including at least 19 deaths, among them four children.

Footage and official statements confirm the scale of destruction.

Europe and the US condemn these actions and call for cessation of hostilities.

US Special Envoy Kit Kellogg highlighted that Russia’s actions threaten global stability and peace, while the US embassy urges both sides to follow dialogue and compromise.

The ongoing tension calls for international efforts to find paths towards peace to stop human suffering and stabilize the region.
