Threats and Tragedies at the Ukrainian-Romanian Border: Human Remains and New Illegal Crossings Attempts
Reports from the Carpathians reveal a tragic incident involving the discovery of human remains, highlighting the perilous situation for those attempting to illegally cross the border.
The incident occurred on the night of August 27, when border guards from the Velatyino section of the Mukachevo border guard unit, while patrolling the Ukraine-Romania border area near Mount Frasin, discovered fragments of a human skeleton.
Preliminary findings suggest that wild animals likely attacked the person, leading to their violent death.
Experts are currently investigating the circumstances of this tragic event.The border guards promptly informed the police to initiate an investigation and determine the causes and details of the incident.
Alongside the bones, items such as documents, clothing fragments, a camouflage backpack, and a bag were found.
These belonged to a 36-year-old man from the Luhansk region, who had previously been detained in November 2023 for attempting to illegally cross into Romania.
For that attempt, a court in Khust district ordered a fine, but despite this, the man persisted with his crossing attempts, ultimately meeting a tragic end in the mountains.In addition, another human skeleton was recently found in a mountainous area in the Shybene section of Ivano-Frankivsk region.
No identification documents were found, making it difficult to establish the person’s identity.
The incident was reported to law enforcement for further investigation, but it remains unclear whether authorities will be able to identify the deceased.Despite increased control measures, daily attempts at illegal border crossings continue, mainly by men of conscription age seeking to evade military service.
Sometimes minors are also involved.
According to Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service, there is no significant increase in these attempts, but the number remains consistently high, posing serious risks for those desperate enough to try crossing undetected.Overall, the situation at the Ukrainian border remains tense.
