Rheinmetall inaugurates Europe’s largest artillery shell factory: new scale of defense industry in Germany

Germany witnesses a remarkable stride in its defense manufacturing capabilities as Rheinmetall, one of Europe’s leading defense contractors, officially opened the largest artillery shell production plant on the continent.
Located near Hanover in northern Germany, this state-of-the-art factory represents a monumental investment of approximately 500 million euros, signifying a major boost to regional economic development.
The facility is expected to generate over 500 high-skilled jobs, fostering both technological advancement and employment growth in the area.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Unterlüßen, top company executives, government officials, and NATO representatives gathered to celebrate this pivotal event.
Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, emphasized the strategic importance of such industrial hubs, noting that the company plans to develop similar facilities across NATO countries to bolster collective European defense infrastructure.
Papperger highlighted Germany’s ability to respond swiftly and responsibly amidst the growing security challenges, asserting that the country is more committed than ever to safeguarding its citizens and allies.
Key figures at the event included Germany’s Finance Minister Lars Klingenberg, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Rutte remarked that facilities like the new plant in Unterlüßen are crucial for NATO’s security, supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression and deterring future conflicts.
Construction of the plant began in early 2024, with initial test production commencing in the second quarter of this year.
The plant is projected to operate at full capacity by 2027, manufacturing up to 350,000 artillery shells annually.
Rheinmetall is also planning to start production of rocket artillery ammunition on-site starting next year, further expanding its defense capabilities.
The factory comprises two main buildings: one dedicated to manufacturing 155mm shells, and another for assembly, packaging, and logistics, ensuring efficient and rapid production tailored to modern military demands.
