Europe’s Concerns Over Ukraine: Will Kyiv Lose Support and What It Means for Eurointegration

Since the onset of Russia’s large-scale invasion into Ukraine, European political elites and government institutions have worked tirelessly to support Kyiv in its fight for independence and European integration.

Initially, many analysts predicted that domestic and external factors would lead to a shift in public opinion within EU countries, turning it negative towards Ukraine and diminishing support for its EU candidacy.

However, reality proved otherwise: the citizens of Europe demonstrated resilience, maintaining solidarity despite economic hardships and the refugee crisis.

Nonetheless, recent reports from Lithuania and other capitals have raised new alarms.

Lithuanian politicians warn that if the European integration process for Ukraine and Moldova stalls or faces significant delays, it could undermine Brussels’ credibility in Kyiv and within member states.

The future of Ukraine’s accession prospects remains uncertain, with Moldova seemingly progressing faster in its accession process.

Lithuania and other EU nations are calling for unified action to accelerate progress and support Ukraine and Moldova, despite opposition from certain member states, notably Hungary, which has used veto power for several months.

Ukraine, having received candidate status in 2022, continues to implement reforms in the judiciary, fight oligarchs, and protect minority rights—efforts aimed at fulfilling the EU membership criteria.

Meanwhile, Brussels and European leaders express concern over reform pace and internal challenges.

The upcoming months will be decisive in maintaining Ukraine’s voice within the EU and demonstrating genuine readiness for accession.

The current political climate, national interests, and intra-EU disagreements make it imperative to seek unity and continued support for Ukraine’s aspirations.Overall, Western countries stress the importance of stability, security, and the goal of Ukraine becoming a full EU member.

The topic of security guarantees for Kyiv and diplomatic solutions to end the war remain critical.

President Zelensky recently called for a meeting with Vladimir Putin to negotiate peace—raising the question: can Europe and the US facilitate this process and show flexibility to broker a ceasefire and future peace?
