Zelensky Announces Expansion of Multiple Citizenship Laws to Germany, Poland, and Czechia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed plans to implement a new law that grants Ukrainians the ability to hold multiple citizenships simultaneously.
According to his statements, Germany, Poland, and Czechia will be the first countries where this legislation will come into effect, following its approval in July of this year.
These initial application areas will pave the way for later expansion to include Canada and the United States, significantly enhancing mobility and legal protections for Ukrainians abroad.
During a meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian World Congress on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized that the Ukrainian government is working actively to adopt the necessary regulatory acts to launch this mechanism as soon as possible.
He described this initiative as a step towards greater unity among Ukrainians worldwide and a vital move in strengthening diaspora ties.
The proposed law was initially submitted to parliament in January 2024 and was signed into law in July, reflecting its high priority for the government.
Implementation will allow Ukrainian citizens to more freely maintain multiple citizenships, fostering stronger diaspora connections and supporting Ukrainian communities abroad.
Zelensky also noted on social media that this law aims to bring Ukrainians closer together globally and help overcome border-crossing barriers.
This legislative development is seen as a strategic move to enhance Ukraine’s international relations and presence.
The idea of multiple citizenship had been discussed well before the large-scale war with Russia began, but after 2022, it became even more relevant as part of efforts to secure the rights of Ukrainians abroad.
The law is expected to have profound political and diplomatic implications and is regarded as one of the key reforms to bolster Ukraine’s international position.
