Morawiecki Proposes Deportation for Displaying Bandera Symbols: A New Step in Addressing Historical Memes

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made a sharp statement regarding the display of symbols associated with Stepan Bandera’s persona.
According to him, such symbols should be strictly controlled and potentially subject to deportation from Poland.
This move reflects a shift in the Polish government’s approach to controversial historical issues, which have recently sparked tensions and disputes both domestically and internationally.
Morawiecki, supporting President Karol Nawarocki’s initiative, equates Bandera symbols with Nazi and communist emblems and proposes expanded criminal measures, including deportation, for those who publicly display these symbols.
The former prime minister emphasized that the demonstration of ‘Bandera symbols’ is an act of extreme provocation and law-breaking, deserving the severest condemnation.
He believes this step aims not only to condemn certain manifestations but also to deepen understanding and explore the historical context of the Volyn tragedy — a brutal genocide that profoundly impacted regional histories.
Morawiecki underlined that equating these symbols with Nazi or Stalinist imagery is a way to show how painful and complex the history of the region is, calling for greater responsibility and understanding among citizens to prevent future tragedies.
