Zelensky and German Vice-Chancellor Discuss Strengthening Ukraine-Germany Military Cooperation: Focus on Air Defense and Security Guarantees

In Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with German Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil to review strategic issues related to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly its air defense systems.
They discussed significant investments in military technology and defense infrastructure to safeguard the country against Russian aggression.
Zelensky announced ongoing efforts to acquire additional Patriot systems and German-made IRIS-T missile systems, which are expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s defensive strength.
Beyond military aid, both leaders addressed diplomatic efforts aimed at peace.
Ukraine seeks to strengthen sanctions against Russia and secure concrete security guarantees, with Germany playing a leading role in international security initiatives.
Zelensky emphasized that diplomatic activities are intensifying at the level of national security advisors and expressed hope that Germany would take a leadership role in developing security guarantees for Ukraine.
In response, Lars Klingbeil pledged that Germany would provide Ukraine with nine billion euros annually in the coming years to support its military and economic stability.
It is also noted that the US and NATO have activated the PURL mechanism—funding for weapon purchases through alliance member contributions, with the Netherlands preparing a aid package worth $500 million, including components and missiles for Patriot systems.
Sweden, Norway, and Denmark will jointly contribute approximately $500 million, demonstrating extensive international support for Ukraine’s security priorities.
