Ukraine Responds to Poland’s Plans to Ban Symbols Related to UPA and Banderites
Ukraine has swiftly reacted to recent statements coming out of Warsaw concerning the Polish president Karol Nawrótсki’s initiative to prohibit the use of so-called ‘Banderite symbols,’ specifically the red-and-black flag associated with the Ukrainian national movement during World War II.
Kyiv officials and experts have emphasized that any legislative moves of this kind could provoke a negative reaction among Ukrainian society and risk damaging bilateral relations.
The Ukrainian capital highlights its respect for historical memory and the efforts aimed at promoting respect for Ukraine’s struggle for independence.
At the same time, they call for prudence and diplomatic understanding to prevent escalation of tensions.
Previously, on August 14th, the Polish president called on the Sejm to ban the ‘Banderite flag’ after incidents during a Belarusian rapper’s concert in Warsaw.
Additionally, the same day, Poland’s leadership proposed a veto on legislation providing assistance to Ukrainian refugees in Poland who are unemployed.
Meanwhile, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Kshishtof Gawkovski sharply criticized Nawrótсki’s actions, claiming they could effectively cut off Starlink internet access to Ukraine, leading to extensive discussions in the media and diplomatic circles in both countries.
