Norway Confirms Support for Ukraine’s Security: Path to Peace and Security Guarantees

Amid the complex conflict in Ukraine, the country receives a renewed signal from its international partners regarding strengthening security mechanisms and seeking long-term peace.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre explicitly emphasized the critical importance of establishing a ceasefire before any serious negotiations.
According to him, this idea is deeply rooted in global diplomacy, as a ceasefire remains the first and most essential step toward a just and lasting peace, supported by the international community.During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Norwegian premier highlighted that Norway is willing to make significant financial investments to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Specifically, Norway plans to allocate 7 billion NOK for the purchase of Patriot air defense systems, which will enhance the Ukrainian military’s defensive effectiveness.Støre stressed the necessity of security guarantees for Ukraine after peace agreements are reached to prevent renewed aggression and future conflicts.
He noted that a safe and stable Ukraine is not only a strategic interest for Europe and the world but also an integral component of regional long-term security.Furthermore, the Norwegian prime minister emphasized the importance of active US involvement in shaping security guarantees for Ukraine, which should be coordinated with European allies.
He believes this will strengthen Ukraine’s defense system, develop air defense capabilities, and create sustainable long-term deterrence.Following his visit to Washington, Ukraine received assurances from US leader Donald Trump regarding ‘very good’ security guarantees.
However, questions about how effectively these guarantees can protect Ukraine from new forms of aggression and the role of the international community remain open.
More details on these challenges and prospects are discussed in Vladimir Kim’s article, ‘Between Article 5 and the Porcupine: The West Seeks Security Guarantees for Ukraine.’
