Germany’s Foreign Minister Calls for Security Guarantees Close to NATO Membership for Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadowful, during a ceremonial event dedicated to Germany’s Open Day, expressed his commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s security in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
He emphasized that future security guarantees for Ukraine should be as close as possible to NATO membership, as this would lay a solid foundation for stability and peace on Europe’s eastern flank.Wadowful highlighted that Kyiv must receive guarantees of security that will protect it from potential military threats originating from Russia.
These assurances are seen as a key step to convincing Russian leader Vladimir Putin to cease aggression and engage in genuine negotiations.
According to Wadowful, these guarantees should be supported by as many international partners as possible, including the United States and other non-European countries. He reported that around thirty states, including Japan, have already expressed their readiness to support Ukraine’s pursuit of security.
The German diplomat warned that violating these guarantees would be considered an act of aggression against Ukraine, with serious consequences.Wadowful believes that signing a peace treaty with Russia should not result in a dictatorial peace that benefits only one side.
He urged Vladimir Putin to halt his aggressive war and to sit at the negotiation table.
Otherwise, Ukraine and its allies are prepared for strong resistance.
Wadowful stressed that European security depends on genuine guarantees for Ukraine — without them, lasting peace in the region is unlikely.
