France Summons U.S. Ambassador Over Anti-Semitism Accusations: Diplomatic Clash Amid Rising Tensions in Europe
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially summoned the U.S.
ambassador, Charles Kushner, in response to his recent critical statements regarding the state of anti-Semitism in France.
This diplomatic move followed a letter he sent to President Emmanuel Macron, in which he accused the French government of insufficient measures to combat anti-Semitic hostility and violence.
Paris considered Kushner’s remarks unacceptable and a breach of diplomatic norms, emphasizing that foreign statements should respect the principle of non-interference in domestic affairs.According to French diplomatic sources, the summons took place on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry clarified that Kushner’s accusations are baseless, as France has been actively working to reduce anti-Semitic incidents and promote tolerance.
In a subsequent letter made public, the advisor to former U.S.
President Donald Trump expressed deep concern over the rising number of anti-Semitic attacks in France and the government’s perceived lack of effective response.
He highlighted that Jewish communities are regularly targeted in street assaults, vandalism of synagogues and schools, and attacks on Jewish businesses.Kushner notably pointed out that this surge in anti-Semitism followed the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
According to him, extremist groups across Europe are engaging in intimidation and violence campaigns, with France being no exception.
The former Trump confidant emphasized that anti-Zionism often manifests as anti-Semitism, which is a serious concern.
He also expressed worry about the low level of historical awareness among French youth regarding the Holocaust, citing studies indicating that half of young people have never heard of it.In response, the French MFA stated that France firmly rejects Kushner’s allegations and is fully committed to combating anti-Semitism.
Paris stressed that such statements violate international law and the policy of non-interference.
The French side also highlighted the importance of transatlantic cooperation and mutual trust among allies, calling for diplomatic dialogue in resolving such sensitive issues.
