A new face appears at the heart of Ukraine’s frontline — 18-year-old Sergey, known by his call sign “Khokhol”.

He is a member of the 100th Separate Motorized Brigade and has been defending the country in eastern Ukraine for several months.

His story gained public attention after OSUV “Dnipro” published a social media post featuring a short video and interview.

In the footage, Sergey shares that shortly after turning 18, he made the decision to enlist, despite his family’s tears and protests when his mother bade farewell to him.

This moment has become a symbol of his unwavering commitment to protecting his homeland.

He explains that his motivation is not only a sense of duty but also love for his family, a desire to safeguard those he cherishes most, and most importantly, to prevent the war from spreading beyond Donetsk into regions like Volyn.

Sergey emphasizes that his choice to serve is more than an individual decision — it embodies a broader idea that should inspire other Ukrainians.

Notably, the country currently has the “Contract 18–24” initiative, allowing young men aged 18 to 24 to voluntarily join the Ukrainian Armed Forces for one or two years, depending on their specialty.

Under this program, soldiers receive a financial reward of one million hryvnias, paid gradually, serving as an additional incentive for youth to defend their country.

Sergey is convinced that the active participation of young people in national defense is a key to Ukraine’s future, viewing it as an investment in the country’s security and stability for years to come.
