Ukrainian Journalist Dmytro Khilyuk Freed from Russian Captivity in a Major Prisoner Exchange

In late August, Ukraine experienced a highly anticipated event: the release of Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Khilyuk from Russian captivity, where he had been held for nearly two years since his abduction during intense military clashes.
According to official statements from President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner Exchange, Khilyuk was returned home on August 24 as part of a large-scale prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia.
Several other Ukrainians were also released, including Melitopol journalist Mark Kaliush, who had been detained by Russian forces in August 2023.
The background of this case traces back to March 3, 2022, when Khilyuk was abducted near his home in Kozarovychi village in Kyiv region amid the early days of the invasion.
He was forcibly taken through Belarus into Russia, specifically into the Novozibkov detention facility in Bryansk region.
His condition after nearly two years in captivity raised serious concerns: reports indicate he weighed no more than 45 kilograms and endured significant physical and psychological hardships.
Former detainees, who shared a cell with him for over a year, confirmed his frail state.
Khilyuk had been working as a journalist for the UNIAN news agency, reporting from the frontline during the most intense phases of the conflict.
His release underscores Ukraine’s persistent efforts to bring home its citizens—a testament to the country’s resilience and commitment to their safety.
The case also highlights ongoing negotiations and the critical importance of effective prisoner exchange processes for safeguarding journalists and civilians caught in conflict zones.
