Ukrainian Apple Prices Drop Significantly as New Harvest Hits the Market: Causes and Outlook

The harvest season for new apples has begun across Ukraine, and alongside this, there is a notable decline in apple prices.

According to the EastFruit analytical project, prices for this season’s apples have been decreasing rapidly, dropping on average by 12% since the beginning of the past week.

As of August 22, wholesale prices ranged between 35 and 45 hryvnias per kilogram ($0.85-$1.09), depending on the variety and shipment volumes. Many wholesale companies and retail chains are still selling leftover apples from the previous harvest, mainly imported from Poland.

This ongoing competition contributes to downward pressure on the prices of the new harvest.

The primary reason for this price decline is the seasonal increase in supply from Ukrainian farms, which significantly boosts the volume of available apples on the domestic market.Demand for apples, both domestically and from exporters, remains relatively low, exacerbating the price pressures.

Additionally, prices for Ukrainian apples are currently approximately 2.2 times higher than in the same period of 2024.

Recently, the head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pishnyi, also noted that prices in the country are rising faster than predicted, which could have various economic implications.
