Russia’s Manipulations Around Kursk Nuclear Power Plant: Another Provocation and Disinformation Campaign

Recent days have once again highlighted the pattern of Russian information outlets disseminating false reports regarding the situation around Ukrainian and Russian nuclear facilities.
This time, the main theme was the alleged ‘threat’ at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, which Russian media and official structures depict as a consequence of Ukraine’s actions.
It is important to note that these claims are yet another attempt by Moscow to create the illusion of a military threat from Ukraine, thereby justifying its aggressive activities in the region.
The Center for Countering Disinformation emphasizes that all accusations against Ukraine are political manipulations without factual basis.
Meanwhile, the situation around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant raises serious concerns: smoke has been observed there, but Russian media attribute this to a transformer fire, supposedly caused by a Ukrainian drone.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that it has no independent confirmation of fires or damage related to the conflict, and normal incidents like accidental fires should not be equated with targeted attacks.
The real threat to nuclear safety in the current situation stems less from local fires and more from Russia’s aggression, including its occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP, which constitutes a significant threat to global nuclear security.
The international community, particularly IAEA, has called for restraint and adherence to fundamental nuclear safety principles to prevent catastrophe amid this tense situation.
