Russian Attacks on Independence Day: Strikes on Kherson Suburb and Sumy

On Ukraine’s Independence Day, August 24, the southern regions of the country experienced heightened tension due to new Russian shelling.
In particular, in the afternoon, Russian forces conducted an airstrike on the outskirts of Kherson, causing considerable concern in the region.
According to Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, three intercontinental bombers (KABs) were hit in the attack, though details about casualties and destruction are still being clarified.
Local residents reported heavy smoke and explosions across the city and surrounding areas.
In response, Ukrainian defenders activated air defense systems, intercepting a hostile reconnaissance drone detected in the eastern part of the region.
Meanwhile, in Sumy, powerful explosions were heard as the area was extensively targeted by kamikaze drones, resulting in damage to infrastructure.
Earlier that morning, Russian forces attacked a residential building in Kherson using a drone, seriously injuring a 62-year-old man.
The victim was urgently hospitalized for medical treatment.
These series of attacks highlight the tense security situation Ukraine faces during this national holiday, emphasizing the ongoing challenges and the critical need for increased protection of civilians.
