Mertz assesses progress in Ukraine peace settlement: only initial steps along the path to peace

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprising statement regarding the current state of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
According to him, the process is moving, but at a very slow pace, comparing it to covering the first 200 meters of a ten-kilometer journey.
Despite this, the politician is confident that all steps are aimed in the right direction.
Merz emphasized that German and European leadership has undertaken the most significant diplomatic efforts in recent weeks, highlighting that the focus is not solely on arms supplies but primarily on diplomatic initiatives to achieve peace.
He pointed out the complexity of the situation caused by statements from Russian leader Vladimir Putin and urged not to abandon the goal of resolving the conflict.
Regarding the background, in August, Merz participated in an important meeting in Washington with U.S.
President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and other high officials.
During these negotiations, he stressed that the main goal of future talks with Russia should be a ceasefire and mentioned the possibility of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin within the next few weeks.
All these actions occur against the backdrop of a tense and unpredictable situation, but Merz remains committed to pursuing peace in Ukraine.
