Recent events surrounding Ukrainian-Hungarian relations once again underscore the regional tension and symbolize the complexity of coexistence between the two countries within the context of energy security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Marc Garneau, mentioned the ‘Friendship’ oil pipeline, hinting that its future depends on Budapest’s decision.

This elicited a stern response from Budapest, where Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó sharply reacted, calling Zelensky’s words a ‘blatant threat.’ The Hungarian government views such actions as a serious attack on their energy security and an infringement on national sovereignty.

The situation calls for dialogue and finding a compromise, as further escalation could have serious consequences for the entire region.

Additionally, Zelensky’s remarks intensified tensions with neighboring countries, including Slovakia, which emphasized the importance of maintaining stable energy supplies, especially in light of recent attacks on the ‘Friendship’ pipeline.

For the second time in recent weeks, Ukrainian forces used unmanned systems to attack this strategic target, which supplies oil to Hungary and Slovakia.

These actions caused international concern and deepened the crisis of trust among regional countries, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic channels to prevent further complications.
