Hungarian Foreign Minister Condemns Zelensky’s ‘Friendship’ Statement: Calls for Cease of Threats and Energy Security Protection
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed strong disapproval and concern over recent statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the so-called ‘Friendship’ pipeline — a strategic Russian-Belarusian oil conduit that forms a vital part of Europe’s energy infrastructure.
In an official statement published on Facebook, the minister urged the Ukrainian leader to cease his ‘blunt threats’ against Hungary, emphasizing that such actions threaten not only diplomatic relations but also the country’s energy security.
Szijjártó highlighted that Zelensky, during Ukraine’s national holiday, made remarks that were perceived as bold hints and accusations, which he considered unacceptable.
He stated that attacks on the pipeline are not mere technical issues or accidental damages but serious assaults on national security and sovereignty.
The minister stressed that the ongoing war Ukraine seeks to justify cannot serve as a legitimate pretext for violating borders and sovereignty of other nations.
He called upon Zelensky to stop escalating the situation and to cease putting Hungary’s energy stability at risk, affirming that all threats or attacks should be condemned by the international community.
In conclusion, Szijjártó emphasized Hungary’s support for friendly Ukrainian-Hungarian relations but reiterated that security and stability in the region are paramount.
The pipeline ‘Friendship’ remains a focal point of regional tension after a series of attacks on the Russian-Belarusian border, prompting regional governments and the European Commission to respond with calls for unity, thorough investigations, and measures to prevent future incidents.
